Biography: Yurie Kato

Yurie Kato(加藤 友里江)

Yurie Kato (加藤 友里江)

Yurie was born on March 27, 1990 in Shimotaga, and was raised in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

She has loved the drawing process since she was a child, and has been constantly drawing in her notebook and in the notebook that her grandfather has created from scratch.

Yurie is huge fan of the illustrations of Momoko Sakura, who is a Japanese manga artist. Yurie grew up in the world of manga and anime culture during the 1990’s and 2000’s, and still loves Sakura’s artwork.

As a form of new self-expression, when Yurie was in junior high school, she started producing works that combined words and pictures.

Around this time, she began collecting memorable pieces of literature such as poetry, novels, and lyrics.

When Yurie started learning English during her first years in high school, she became interested in translation and translated poems from great poets like E.E. Cummings.

Yurie has stated: “The world I got from the words, I was impressed with, comes back to me many times with colors, scents, and sometimes sounds. It is said that the many words that I encountered when I was a student are the roots of my sensibility.”

“Drawing pictures and spinning words is the time to interact with yourself.

There is a gap between reality and fantasy

It’s like the sky of that day seen from the sea

Towards the swaying light

Let’s go up to be driven by something.”
